Social distancing guidelines have impacted the home technology business — there’s no way around it. While there may be an uptick once restrictions are lifted, some industry experts believe there will be fewer projects in the long term given the economic fallout of the pandemic.

Thankfully, there are several ways you can stay afloat and increase business as restrictions are lifted. Let’s dig in.

Think small (for now)

In the near term, focus on smaller upgrade projects. People have been stuck at home for a long time, and they’re probably noticing things they didn’t before. They may need an additional smart light switch or smart wall outlet in a newly minted home office, for instance. Also, more people are looking for hands-free options to control their homes in general.

Due to COVID-19, “we are seeing and hearing of demand for voice control in more rooms and more applications than ever,” Alex Capecelatro, CEO of Josh.ai, recently told CEPro.

iDevices products aren’t part of a larger system, and can be installed as a one-off to meet an immediate need. They're Wi-Fi based, so no hub needed, and they can be controlled by voice through Siri, Amazon Alexa, and the Google Assistant. Instinct™, our latest and most innovative smart light switch, has Alexa built right inside, giving you a stylish and clean way to integrate a voice assistant into any space — no additional smart speaker needed.

Round out your offering

While interest in smart home technology is growing fast, not everyone is in the market for an expensive whole-home system. Given uncertainties with the pandemic and economy, now is the perfect time to round out your product bag with less expensive options that don't sacrifice quality.

Give your potential customers a few different options based on price tiers. You can still pitch them on more expensive options, but equip them with a second or third choice. This prevents sticker shock, and allows them to build their smart home at their own pace. With no fees or hubs, and compatibility with the most popular smart home platforms, iDevices is the clear solution.

Instead of hooking up the whole home, a prospective customer on a budget may want to start with smart lighting and HVAC in a single zone or floor. A smaller project like this isn’t conduscive to a whole-home system, both in terms of functionality and cost. Give your customers a taste of the smart home lifestyle, and they’ll come back to you for more when the time is right.

All together now

Home technology can be sporadic in terms of interoperability. Homeowners don’t want to use multiple apps, or be told they can’t use a certain device because it’s not compatible with the system they shelled out for.

“Consumers themselves face the danger of finding themselves ‘tied in’ to a particular network provider – which can often limit the options available if a particular tool or device they need won't play nicely with their favorite platform,” Bernard Marr wrote in a recent Forbes article on smart home trends.

Your customers don’t want to feel trapped. Give them options that allow them to continue building their smart home (by calling on you, of course) as they wish.

As noted above, iDevices products work with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Home — by far the most popular smart home platforms around. They also work with IFTTT, allowing homeowners to connect to other platforms or services as they wish.

The iDevices Connected app is a HomeKit aggregator, meaning users can pull in and control any HomeKit-compatible product from one place. And if a user prefers Amazon Alexa or Google Home, iDevices products can be pulled into those respective apps for one-stop control. And for your own peace of mind, iDevices maintains and enforces a strict iMAP policy, ensuring you can’t be undercut by other selling partners or unauthorized sellers on Amazon.
