iDevices recently partnered with Indianapolis-based research group The Farnsworth Group as part of a joint effort to better understand the needs of homebuilders, remodelers and trade professionals installing smart home products at an ever-increasing rate.

The prospect of regularly installing smart home products may seem daunting to some homebuilders and trade professionals. Rest assured, it’s not just more work for the sake of work – the ability to provide your customers with up-front expertise on a growing industry is a clear differentiator. According to one recent study, the smart home market was valued at $24.10 billion in 2016, and is expected to reach approximately $53.45 billion by 2022. There’s no doubt the smart home industry will continue to grow exponentially as technology steadily improves. That’s why iDevices is sharing some of our industry insights – so you’re prepared for the “smart home building boom.”

The Farnsworth Group, led by president and CEO Brad Farnsworth, has been accruing expertise in the home and building industry for over 30 years. Over the course of several months, researchers conducted in-depth interviews with over 200 decision-makers in the homebuilding industry from across the country. Here are some of the most interesting takeaways:

Smart light switches/outlets are standard - A majority of respondents said they install smart light switches and outlets as a standard offering, closely followed by smart thermostats and garage door openers. Smart cameras, video doorbells and integrated security systems are viewed as “upgrade” offerings. That means at the very least, you should be familiar with smart lighting solutions like the iDevices Wall Switch, Dimmer Switch and Wall Outlet.

Homebuilders start the conversation - Just over 60% of respondents said they’re the first ones to bring up smart home technology during conversations with customers/homeowners. Don’t wait for the homeowner to start the conversation — woo them with your expertise. For homeowners, there’s an intimidation factor, especially with the deluge of one-off smart home products on the market. Demonstrate how whole home solutions, like iDevices, allow them to connect their entire home without having to worry about integrating different brands and apps. Sell the lifestyle and watch your business expand through referrals and reviews from happy customers.

The most popular platforms - A majority of respondents say they install products that work with Amazon Alexa. The next most popular offering is products that are Wi-Fi-enabled (as opposed to radio frequency-based systems), followed by products that work with the Google Assistant. Preferences change, which is why iDevices Wi-Fi-enabled product line works with Alexa, the Google Assistant or Siri (Apple HomeKit).

Reliability is top of mind (as it should be) - Reliability is the most important factor when it comes to selecting a smart home product or brand to install. Why, you ask? Well, if you're a homebuilder or trade professional, you know that once the job is done, you don't have the bandwidth or resources to field calls and questions from homeowners dealing with a product that isn't working.  Respondents also noted that product warranties, easy-to-update products, and products that are simple to install are key drivers in determining what brand to place in a home. iDevices products, known for their sophisticated design and reliability, are backed by a 100% U.S.-based customer support team. The iDevices Wall Switch, Dimmer Switch, Wall Outlet, Instant Switch and Thermostat all come with a 2-year warranty. And the kicker – iDevices products are designed to install just like any standard offering.
