Here's what we've been up to at iDevices...
Dimmer switches are a must-have in any home, creating mood and ambiance homeowners can customize by room to accentuate décor, entertain, and relax.
With a regular dimmer switch, the range (minimum/maximum brightness) and smoothness of lighting transitions can be limited by hardware. For example, an older switch designed to work with incandescent bulbs won’t work well with LEDs. Bulbs and dimmers with mismatched ratings can lead to buzzing and flickering, which is the worst.
Smart lighting can save the day — specifically, the iDevices Dimmer Switch, which includes a trimming feature so you can easily adjust minimum and maximum brightness levels.
Prevent “bulb flicker”
At low dim levels, LED and CFL bulbs tend to flicker. That’s because there’s no industry standard for when a dimmable bulb will turn off. You might have one bulb rated to dim to 5 percent, while the other gets down to 20 percent. Once you dim to 20 percent, one bulb will start to flicker or turn off, while the bulb rated at 5 percent will continue to dim smoothly.
Generally, higher quality bulbs have the ability to dim lower. That doesn’t mean you need to replace all of your bulbs. To avoid the dreaded flicker, the iDevices Dimmer Switch allows you to manually adjust dim levels in the iDevices Connected app.
After the app tests your bulb to see how low it can go before turning off, you can easily set the dim level above the “off” point for a smooth, flicker free transition. While setting up the iDevices Dimmer Switch, the Connected app will walk you through testing and setting dim levels. You can also adjust dim levels in the app after setup — just click here for directions.
Create your comfort zone
Sometimes a new lighting fixture looks great on paper, but once installed its brightness throws you off. If the minimum/maximum brightness levels are a little too extreme, you can quickly adjust them with the iDevices Dimmer Switch (and avoid messing around with different bulbs).
If 100 percent brightness is a little too sun-like, drop the max brightness to 85 percent so you still have plenty of functional light without averting your eyes when you walk into a room. If at 10 percent minimum brightness you don’t feel like you’re getting enough light, up it to 20 percent to maintain ambiance and visibility. With the lack of standardization mentioned earlier, this feature is a huge bonus, allowing you to create your own lighting comfort zone.
Simple, straightforward control
The iDevices Dimmer Switch features double-tap functionality for convenient physical control. Quickly transition between maximum/minimum brightness by double-tapping the top or bottom portion of the rocker switch (top for maximum brightness, bottom for minimum brightness — see detailed button controls here). Press the top portion of the rocker switch twice for maximum brightness, and the bottom portion twice for minimum brightness. If you adjust the maximum/minimum brightness setting in the Connected app, the double-tap levels will also adjust! Holding down either the top or bottom portion of the rocker switch will slowly adjust brightness.
Since it's a Wi-Fi smart light switch, you can also control the iDevices Dimmer Switch from anywhere from your mobile device using the aforementioned Connected app. And for hands-free control, use voice commands to Siri, Amazon Alexa, or the Google Assistant. You can make even the most subtle adjustments with voice commands, and activate Scenes/Routines that adjust multiple fixtures at once.
